Versailles, name of palace and town it is located in, approximately 20 miles west of Paris. It was the seat of the absolute monarchy between 1682 and 1789.
Originally this was the location of a hunting lodge for Louis XIII, built 1630's. King Louis XIV built most of the current palace and gardens.
The total estate covered 8000 hectares (19,800 acres, 31 sq miles) but was reduced after the revolution to the current size of 815 hectares (2014 acres, 3.14 sq miles).
Hall of Mirrors, location of signing of Treaty of Versailles that ended world war I on June 28, 1919.
